Design and demonstration of a quantum interface between a single ion and a single photon

Research Theme

My objective is to demonstrate a quantum interface which converts quantum states of a single ion to those of a single photon and vice versa in a precisely controlled way. A new groundbreaking ion trap integrating a fiber optical cavity will enable us to achieve strong coupling between a single ion and a single photon for the first time. As a consequence, applications like a very efficient single photon source and the implementation of a quantum network would become possible. Furthermore this could lead to the creation of an essential technology interlinking the ion-trapping and photonic sciences.
